Prairie Poem #7:

Vulpes velox, or the Swift Fox

Early morning— in

The crisp air, the swift fox stands

Outside her burrow.

Ears swiveling like

Satellites, she listens to

The tall grass rustling.

There— she hears something:

A ground squirrel, unaware

That she is nearby.

Crouching low to the ground,

She stalks through the grass, unseen—

Not making a sound.

Closer.. still closer

Then, she pounces, before the

Squirrel can escape.

Later that morning,

She and her kits eat breakfast

Out on the prairie.
